Filmaporto grants: five projects selected that explore stories of memory and resistance

Filmaporto will fund five projects with 20,000 euros that will be realised entirely in the city of Porto. This year, the film proposals submitted by Eloy Serén, João Niza Ribeiro, Letícia Simões, Patrícia Neves Gomes and Ricardo Leite have been selected.

As in previous editions, there are two types of support, aimed at different audiences and named after the founders of Neves & Pascaud, the first company to present films to the public in Porto. The Neves grant is aimed at artists and filmmakers living in the municipality of Porto and production organisations based in the municipalities of Porto, Matosinhos or Vila Nova de Gaia, together with artists and filmmakers living in the municipality of Porto. This grant was awarded to Os Vermelhos do Bonfim, by João Niza Ribeiro, about the repression of migrants; Travessias Malungas, by Letícia Simões, a visual and sound collage that takes a look at the women who resisted the slave trade; and Áureos, by Ricardo Leite, a tribute to the artists Aurélio da Paz dos Reis and Aurélia de Souza.

The Pascaud grant is aimed at artists and filmmakers residing outside the municipality of Porto and production organisations based in the municipalities of Porto, Matosinhos or Vila Nova de Gaia in conjunction with artists and filmmakers residing outside the municipality of Porto. Selected in this category were Não Falarei, by Eloy Serén, which follows a young couple hiding from the political police in a Porto neighbourhood in 1951; and Estrela Celeste, by Patrícia Neves Gomes, about the tragic outcome of a loan shark’s business.

The minutes of the competition, which took place between 27 May and 21 June 2024, can be consulted on the Filmaporto website. The applications were assessed by a jury made up of Luís Urbano (film producer), Melanie Pereira (filmmaker) and Tomás Paula Marques (filmmaker and visual artist).
